Apparently it’s the amusement night in Emperor Akbar’s lavishly decorated mirror palace but strangely all courtiers are sitting tense with bated breaths. The emperor is on his throne – looking agitated; the crown prince Salim is sitting nearby – looking downcast. The court danseuse Anarkali is performing tonight and her agenda is special. A commoner falling in love with a Royal and expressing her emotions with unflinching courage, despite knowing the ultimately fatal consequences of her love story.
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke is a testimony to the musical genius of Sudhir Phadke who left for his heavenly abode on July 29, 2002. I still fondly remember meeting him last year at his Shivaji Park flat in Mumbai, when the great octogenarian and his ever so courteous wife Lalita – a fine playback singer of the forties, had regaled me with their musical reminiscences.
