Bhootnath

Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

When a cruise boat captain (Shahrukh Khan) brings his wife (Juhi Chawla) and his eight year-old son (Armaan Siddiqui) to settle in Goa; little do they know that the big, old mansion they are taking over is haunted. Kailashnath (Amitabh Bachchan) – the ghost residing there tries every trick in the book to scare the young kid away but sure in his belief that ‘There are no ghosts, only angels’, the impish school-boy not only thwarts those tricks but actually manages to befriend the troubled soul! Now this unique friendship will change their destinies forever!

If only the writer- director Vivek Sharma had had concentrated on writing better comic scenes and done away with the soapy sentimentality and preachy ‘Family values’ advice, this film could have become a much more enjoyable entertainer. Perhaps he felt that just making a light-hearted children’s film was not a safe bet and then added some weepy family emotional drama to go with it. Vishal- Shekhar’s music fails to fit into the film and most of the songs seem like unwanted intrusions.

Still thanks to some good special effects and an excellent chemistry between the old Bachchan and the young Armaan, the film is worth a watch.
