Ragini MMS 2
Year: 2014
Director: Bhushan Patel
Cast: Sunny Leone, Praveen Dabas, Saahil Prem, Sandhya Mridul, Divya Datta

In 2011, Ragini MMS became a sleeper hit. It was a low budget horror movie, which succeeded at the box office despite its practically unknown cast. The entire appeal of that film with a simple one-line plot was in its taut treatment (Full credit to the director Pavan Kriplani!) and truly goose-bumpy scary moments.

Ekta Kapoor, who had produced the original, now comes back with a sequel, making multiple key changes in the scheme of things.. She has changed the theme from horror to horrex (A horror-sex combo!); taken a new director and cast Sunny Leone as the main lead!

Its resounding box office success tells that audiences have lapped up the new offering in the new garb. But how is it actually?

What’s the plot?

A film-crew reaches the deserted bungalow made famous by the horrific Ragini MMS episode. Their intention is to make a horror film based on that story. The lead actress is an ex-porn star (Sunny Leone as Sunny Leone!). Of course, the notorious haunted house still retains all its evil powers and the shooting of the film is all set to be an ill-fated other-worldly experience!

What’s hot?

·        The film fully keeps its promise about the ‘Sex’ part of the ‘Horrex’ theme! After leaving behind her much-discussed X-rated film career, Ragini MMS 2 must have come as a piece of cake for Sunny Leone. From the time, she makes her entry with a raunchy item song Baby Doll Main Sone Dii, she just expertly goes through a slew of sex scenes with practically every male co-star in the cast and as if it is not enough, she then essays a kissing scene with Sandhya Mridul! To give ‘dignity’ to her ‘character’, the writer and the director plant a few dialogues about how an ex-porn star is always viewed with ‘that’ kind of vision!

What’s not?

·        The slipshod plot/dialogue writing, caricature-ish characterization and pathetically presented scary scenes make this film a horror show of a different kind!

·        Parveen Dabas as a loud, lewd director; Divya Dutta as a mantra-chanting psychiatrist; Sandhya Mridul as a Rakhi Sawant-‘inspired’ bimbo; Saahil Prem as an ‘intense’ script-writer loathe to move his facial muscles and Karan Taluja as a bragging TV-actor…all make up a cast hell-bent (Quite literally!) on making fools of themselves.

Verdict

The film Miss Lovely had done a shocking expose on the porn film business that thrived under the guise of C-grade horror flicks in the eighties. In today’s times, A-grade reputed film-makers do the same thing and they do it openly!

Ragini MMS 2 may do a multi-crores business; at core, it will still remain a third rate sleaze-fest devoid of any cinematic virtues!
