Singh Is Bliing
Year: 2015
Director: Prabhu Deva
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta, Kay Kay Menon

Amitabh Bachchan had once remarked in an interview that he could not understand how Singh Is King (featuring Akhsay-Katrina as lead pair and Anees Bazmi as the director) became such a big blockbuster. Obviously he was polite enough not to mention that what he actually meant was he just couldn’t fathom how such a silly, nonsensical movie managed to be such a huge money-spinner!

As the second installment of the Singh series – Singh Is Bliing crosses 100 crores collection mark  in quick time, one is tempted to ask a similar question.

What’s the plot?

A young Sardar (Akshay Kumar as Raftaar Singh!) is wasting his life in silly antics in his village in Punjab. His irate father sends him to Goa to work at his old friend’s place. In Goa, the young Singh’s duty is to accompany and protect a Romanian Mafia don’s daughter (Amy Jackson), who has come there to stay out of sight of her father’s rival gang leader (Kay Kay Menon). She also wants to find her estranged mother, who has left her father because of his criminal activities! It is now fairly obvious that the son of Sardar and daughter of Don are destined to fall in love but there are many goof-ups and fights (and the inevitable visit to Pyara Punjab!) in between, before they will finally unite! And yes, there is also going to be a quirky lady translator (Lara Dutta) to further spruce up things!

Verdict

The film once again proves Akki’s hold on box-office. He carries the silly plot on his broad shoulders and even makes it entertaining at times. Amy Jackson looks good, does some great action sequences but is a no-show in emotions department! Kay Kay Menon is good as ever in his role as the over the top villain. Lara Dutta delivers a feisty performance. Rati Agnihotri (in maternal role) and rest of the supporting cast do their parts sincerely. The songs are catchy.

Director Prabhu Deva does a much better job than Aness Bazmi did in the first installment. Prabhu has almost patented a sure-shot formula of a box office hit. Take a totally shoddy plot devoid of logic and sense; fill it up with songs, dances, stunts, buffoonery and melodrama and present a Masala-stuffed film to masses. Well, if you think it is an act of a silly, shallow man, revise your opinion. It is a very clever and intelligent man at work here, who exactly knows what sells big time in the market!

If you have gotten used to ‘good, clever, sensible new Hindi cinema’, then avoid this flick at all costs. But if you don’t mind spending two hours in some old fashioned ‘filled to brim with spice’ film that occasionally also entertains, then you may not mind giving more Bling to this Singh!
