What's Your Raashee?

Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

What exactly got into Ashutosh Gowarikar's head to prompt him to make such a film? The director who has given us memorable films such as Lagaan, Swades and Jodha Akbar, comes up with a rather naïve and childish comedy that is bound to raise such blunt questions.

To get his elder brother out of his multi-million debt, a Chicago-returned MBA (Harman Baweja) agrees for a quick marriage, which would then make him eligible for his grandfather's property! (Getting confused?Don't blame me. There is more to come!) The only condition the would-be groom states is to see one girl per each sun-sign! So with his match-making uncle (Darshan Jariwala), the boy sets off to find his dream-girl from the 12 chosen ones, one from each sun-sign!

The plot which starts promisingly and indeed could have been entertaining, soon loses grip with silly characters and sillier events. The unending length of film, an overkill of songs/dances and a hurried climax prove the other dampeners. Harman Baweja is plain amateurish. Priyanka Chopra gets to assay twelve characters (A supposed Guinnes Book world record!) and does quite a good job of that. The supportive cast manages to raise more chuckles than the lead actors and that should tell us something about the overall quality (or the lack of it!) of the film.

A Priyadarshan or a David Dhavan or a Basu Chatterjee could have made a good comedy out of this story-line but Gowarikar fails miserably to cook the curry right!
