Expression of romance in Hindi songs is undergoing a sea-change over the years. The earlier trends and traditions are falling by the wayside and they are being replaced by a whole new style. Here’s a light-hearted look at what we had in terms of matters of heart in Hindi songs earlier and what we often have now!

sonal/ Nocturnal pining for love:

The classic Bollywood romance earlier had one typical premise. ‘Look at the blooming season, the blossoming night. O my love, where art thou?’

  1. Yeh Raat Yeh Chandani Phir Kahan Sun Jaa Dil Ki Dastan – (Jaal) – Lata Mangeshkar- Hemant Kumar
  2. Aaja Sanam Madhur Chaandani Mein Hum – (Chori Chori )– Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey
  3. Tu Kahan Yeh Bata Iss Nasheeli Raat Mein Maane Na Mera Dil Deewana – (Tere Ghar Ke Saamne) – Mohd. Rafi
  4. Balma Khuli Hawa Mein Mehki Huyi Fiza Mein Dil Chahta Hai Mera Behkna Idhar Udhar – (Kashmir Ki Kali) – Asha Bhosle
  5. Chanda Ki Kirnon Mein Lipti Hawayen, Sitaron Ki Mehfil Jawan, Aake Mil Jaa – (Intezar) – Kishore Kumar

Romancing in rains:

Expounding the same seasonal theme, Bollywood songs also used the monsoon- rains as an eternal excuse for love and passion. The rain-drenched couple finding warmth in each other was a perfect formula to sizzle the screen.
