Dev D

Amit Trivedi

Composer-singer Amit Trivedi had made his presence felt with some unusual and striking songs in Aamir and in Dev D he raises the bar even higher. Dev D is said to be Anurag Kashyap’s modern take on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s famous classic novel Devdas and Trivedi’s soundtrack is so very different from the typical contemporary Bollywood albums that it is bound to raise quite a few eyebrows. Yes, it is one of those soundtracks that would get ‘Love it’ and ‘Hate it’ comments in equal measures! The music is eclectic to the extreme!

The opening number sets the tone. It’s a marriage-song replete with deliberately amateurish singing, loud brass band sounds and the wacky over-the-top desi English lines like Tera Emosanal Atyachar! The song rendered by actual bandmasters Rangeela and Raseela has somehow managed to catch the public fancy and is currently among the chartbusters. Songs like Amit Trivedi’s Duniya and Nayan Tarase; Tochi’s Pardesi, Shilpa Rao’s Dhol Yaara Dhol and Shruti Pathak’s Payalia are based on tunes fusing Indian folk and classical music, mostly with Western Rock arrangements. Aditi Singh Sharma’s Yahi Meri Zindagi,  Joi’s Ek Hulchal Si and Anusha Mani’s Dil Mein Jaagi are moody ballads. Labh Jhanjhua’s Mahi Mehnu and Hikknal are hard-core Punjabi dance tracks.

There are as many as 18 tracks in this album and almost each number evokes a different mood through the experimentation with different singing voices, musical arrangements and mixing techniques.
