Piyush Mishra

Piyush Mishra, essaying the triple role of lyricist- composer- singer, creates a distinctive and memorable soundtrack for Anurag Kashyap’s political drama set in Rajasthan.

Two Rajasthani folk flavoured dance- numbers- Ranaji Mhare and Beedo Duje Thaali Ka in Rekha Bhardwaj’s husky sensuous voice are enticingly robust, rustic and raunchy. Shilpa Raoh’s sentimental ballad Aisi Sazaa is pleasing to ears. Piyush Mishra’s Duniya, Aarambh and Sheher (with Swannd Kirkire) and Rahul Ram’s Yaar Maula and Raat Ke Musafir are appealing for their imaginative tunes, unconventional voices and incisive sociopolitical observations.

Mishra’s lyrics do perfect justice to the serious political and ideological content in most songs; but his lighthearted passing references about twin towers, Uncle Sam, Iraq and Afghanistan in Ranaji are great examples of satirical writing.
