Pursuit Of Happyness

Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

Have you ever felt as if you were swimming against the tide-just trying to stay afloat but constantly getting pulled down by currents from all sides? Chris Gardener’s (Will Smith) life is one such uphill battle. It’s San Francisco in the early eighties and Gardener is trying to make a living by selling bone density meters- medical gadgets which are expensive and hard to sell. The lack of money has its effects and soon Gardener is facing rent and tax troubles. His frustrated wife Linda leaves him to fend for himself and his 5 year-old son Christopher (Jadyn Smith). Ambitious and smart Gardener enrolls into a stock-broker training program- a brutal, unpaid job where only one in twenty makes it big. But his troubles are far from over. Evicted from his home, left penniless by the taxmen and reduced to living in Church shelters- at times having to spend a night in the railway station’s toilet, Gardener will have to summon every ounce of his mental and physical strength to raise his child and keep his own dream in tact. Can he do it?

Pursuit of Happyness is a heart-rending film of a single jobless, homeless father desperately trying to make a better life for himself and his son against all odds. It’s a touching battle-story of an underdog and it has been told sensitively, without glossing over. Will Smith is simply brilliant in portraying the central character based on the real life Chris Gardener- a Wall Street legend! The DVD also features an interview with this real Gardener!
