Year: 2018
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana

Rohit Shetty has mastered the art and science of making blockbuster masala movies. No director from the past or present Bollywood has delivered such a long list of successful mass entertainers. Simmba adds on to that list and goes to become Shetty’s most successful entertainer till date.

What’s the plot?

An ambitious orphan boy grows up to become a cop- not to protect the poor but to become rich. Unscrupulous and corrupt, yet likable and kind-hearted, this police inspector (Ranveer Singh) is sent to Goa with an explicit instruction to not bother the powerful local don (Sonu Sood). An unsavoury incident turns the situation on its head. Now the ‘sold-out’ cop has a change of heart and will go all out take down the don’s empire!

What’s hot?

Shetty delivers a mass-pleasing blend of action, emotion, romance and comedy garnished with dialogue-baazi, songs and dances. The 70s- 80s style is quite evident and so is the penchant for colorful frames.

In the titular role, Ranveer Singh delivers an entertaining energetic performance. His chemistry with the leading lady Sara Ali Khan is endearing. Sonu Sood plays the main villain with menace and gravitas.

The supporting cast led by Ashutosh Rana and host of actors from Marathi film industry does an excellent job.

Cameos by Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar.

What’s not?

  • Too formulaic, disjointed and over-the-top at times.
  • Weak plot and climax.
  • Lengthy.

Verdict

Simmba is a typical ‘time-pass’ masala-movie with all the standard ingredients. Ranveer Singh throws himself into the character and does a good job, but still he can’t really match up with Ajay Devgan’s Singham and Salman Khan’s Dabbang- impact.
